I think there are a lot of misconceptions being fronted as fact by people who have absolutely no clue what they are talking about here. I've seen many people say pirates are not trustworthy, pirates will lie, cheat, scam, whatever it takes to get a kill or win. Those are pretty big words for people not in the know. Just because you were spurned by someone who wanted to be a pirate and didn't honor your ransom, doesn't mean every real pirate is like that.
Pirates have specific rules they live by. Not guidelines, as is so popular a way of thinking due to a certain movie that everyone seems to quote as fact so much. Ransoms? Always honored. Lieing? There's a line that is drawn in the sand, so to speak, and we don't cross it. If a corp mate of mine calls out a 1 on 1 for a target, that's his dumbass fault if he blows up. I'm guilty as hell for that. Smack in local? Well, my corp has a strict no smack initiation rule. If we get smacked back, we try to keep it out of the 5th grade level, or just let them run their mouth, and we paste it on our corp forums. Pirates don't sit at a gate and camp macro haulers. Well, they may from time to time out of boredom, or to test a new set up for tank or lock times.
I also have lived out in 0.0 a lot, and fought battles for territory, as well as existance. There is a big difference from warfare and piracy. Most people see things in stereotypes, such as getting killed in low sec means piracy, while getting killed in 0.0 means warfare. PvP is a general term used for any player vs player actions. In Eve, people will say that trading is the harshest form of pvp, and it's not a lie. The difference between piracy and warfare is all on the act, not the location.
If my pirate corp (we claim we are pirates and live up to it) are being attacked by another corp, we have swapped into a warfare role. If we are out probing for mission runners, then we are in a piracy role.
There are people who just go out randomly for a little action and will blow up anything they can, this doesn't make them a pirate persay, I'd usually put that in the griefer/random hunter catergory. Weekend warrior, if you will. There is more to piracy than just "making shiny explosions" or "make violence teh boatz" piracy needs an income, which if possible, comes from ransoms more than loot drops. While there are romantic tales of people popping a faction and officer fitted CNR running a lvl 4 in low sec, it's really not that common. A half T2 tanked BS with mid level named weapons is more common. Just think, if the pirate doesn't honor the ransom, and they catch a corp mate of that person, will the corp mate pay up a ransom? or just let the ship explode? It's life to a pirate to live by rules. Those that don't, aren't pirates but griefers and scammers, and the real pirate crowd definately wont harbour them.
As far as Anti Pirate, it's a cute label that a lot of people try to pin on themselves. Usually all this means is they don't hunt anything in low sec that isn't set red to them. There are very few, if any, successful corps that are able to make a living hunting only pirates, so that romance should be left out of your thinking as well.
While I'm not a fan of BEES, simply because they got a Rifter of mine that I really loved back in the day... I respect them fully, and know that they are honorable. Same with muffin factory. Same with Veto. These are just a few of the corps that operate remotely close to where I do, and I'm sure that they would say the same for my corp. (see link at bottom) There's more to being a pirate than just going out to low sec and going omgpewpew.
